Aneta Kopacz's Joanna and Tomasz Sliwinski's Our Curse both explore dilemmas faced by families after the diagnosis of a terminal illness.

Kopacz's Joanna focuses on a woman who decides to write a blog on discovering that she gas just three months to live.

In Our Curse, Sliwinski turns the camera on himself, when he and his wife are informed that their newborn son has an incurable disease.

Both films have already won a number of awards on the international film festival circuit.

As many as 58 short documentaries qualified to compete for an Oscar this year, an increase of 18 on last year.

The short-list of eight will ultimately be whittled down to 5 or 3 films, depending on the scores they receive from Academy members.

The nominations will be announced on Thursday 15 January.

Poland also has high hopes in the Best Foreign Language category, with Pawel Pawlikowski's Ida tipped as the favourite. (nh)
