Schudrich described the museum as “absolutely amazing,” reflecting that the permanent exhibition offers something for everyone.

“Anyone who doesn't have Jewish roots will come away with a better understanding of Jewish life, and every Jew who visits the museum will leave with a greater understanding of the history and culture of Poland,” he said.

“I am proud that the exhibition has been constructed in such a wise, sensible way, which tries to show all aspects of Jewish history in Poland,” he added.

“The permanent exhibition of the museum was created by both Jewish and Polish historians, as well as sociologists and specialists from other fields, so this exhibition and the museum really do symbolise what they are describing – 1000 years of Jewish life on the Polish lands.”

The main exhibition takes in over 4000 square metres, divided into eight galleries.

Temporary exhibitions are also planned, and there is an educational centre and a multifunctional hall, the latter designed to serve as both a cinema and and a concert hall.

The Museum of the History of Polish Jews was founded in 2007, after Finnish architect Rainer Mahlamaki won an international competition. The investment has cost 330 million zloty (about 80 million euro), just under two thirds of which was covered by the Ministry of Culture and the City of Warsaw. A number of private individuals, both Jewish and Polish, also contributed to the enterprise, notably the US-based Taube Philanthropies and the Koret Foundation.

The permanent exhibition opens on Tuesday 28 October. (nh)
