Kosarewicz, who worked with over 50 directors including Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieslowski and Andrzej Zulawski, was considered a cult figure within the Polish film industry.

He cut his teeth working as assistant production designer on Wojciech Has's fantastical classic The Saragossa Manuscript (1965).

Kosarewicz later referred to the experience as ''my scenographic university.''

In 1975, he won the award for best production design for his work on Andrzej Wajda's The Promised Land at the Polish Film Festival (later renamed Gdynia Film Festival).

The movie, which showed the splendours and misery of the industrial city of Lodz in the 19th century, won an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Kosarewicz remained active over the last decade, winning an Eagle at the Polish Film Awards in 2009 for his work on Waldemar Krzystek's movie Little Moscow. (nh)
