A Warsaw cafe has paid tribute to its most distinguished former regular, writer and film-maker Tadeusz Konwicki, who died on 7 January aged 88.

During the communist era, Konwicki's preferred table at Warsaw's Czytelnik (Reader) cafe was graced by some of Poland's most colourful cultural figures.

A framed photograph of the writer of A Minor Apocalypse now adorns the table.

As regulars have recalled, secret police officers often appeared at neighbouring tables, hoping to eavesdrop on the literati.

Perhaps for this reason, Konwicki once quipped that parties were ''purely recreational'' at the table.

Tadeusz Konwicki was one of the towering figures in post-war Polish literature and cinema. Besides winning acclaim as a novelist, he wrote and directed a number of noted films, including Jump (Salto), a favourite of US film-maker Martin Scorsese. (nh)
