Set in the sleepy medieval town of Sandomierz, the murder mystery sees the return of Prosecutor Teodor Szacki (Robert Więckiewicz) in a movie that is at once a thriller and an exploration of ghosts from Poland's Jewish past.

''There is a really difficult issue about finding a great story in Polish,'' director Borys Lankosz told Radio Poland after a screening at Kraków's Pod Baranami cinema on Friday.

''And in Zygmunt's novel everything was right.''

''The main character is charismatic, the structure is fantastic.

''And then this background, which is so important.

''It tells about us, our traumas, about Polish history.

''It's not only about intrigue.

'A Grain of Truth' is Lankosz's second feature film, following on from 2009's award-winning 'Reverse', an unlikely black comedy set in Stalinist Warsaw.

On his return to movie-making, the director has taken up a clearly defined genre and used it to explore lingering anti-semitic prejudices.

''I believe that pop culture can be a great tool,'' he says.

''Because it's a genre film, because it's a thriller, it can create a space of safety.

''I would like to create a space where people are not fighting anymore, but rather trying to discuss the problem calmly after watching the movie." (nh)
