''From the start we were striving to make a film that wasn't pompous,'' Szumowska said at a press conference accompanying the premiere, as cited by Onet.

''We were dealing with very slippery subjects: the belief in ghosts, bereavement, illness as serious as anorexia.

''It would be easy to fall into pretentiousness, to sink into heavy drama, typical of art house films.

''Personally I don't like such movies, because the viewer has no chance to breathe, and the author doesn't t have distance to the material.''

'Body' sees seasoned actor Janusz Gajos in the role of a cynical public prosecutor who is stuck in a dysfunctional relationship with his daughter (Justyna Suwała) following the death of the teenager's mother.

However, a therapist (Maja Osztaszewska) who also dabbles as a psychic compels the pair to face some home truths.

Szumowska has grappled with a number of thorny issues in her career to date, winning success at the Berlinale in 2013 for 'In the Name of..', which explores the predicament of a gay Polish priest. The film won the so-called 'Teddy Award,' a prize bestowed on outstanding films dealing with LGBT issues. (nh)
