Director Jacek Mikołajczyk translated the lyrics to the ghoulish musical himself, and he is keeping fingers crossed that Poles will embrace the production.

''The phenomenon of this musical is that this is a grotesque family that's dealing with horrible things that in theory should not be funny, because they're all associated with death and the cemetery – in short everything that's frightful and gruesome,'' he told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

''At the same time it's hilarious and they themselves are terribly likeable.''

The Addams Family first came into existence in 1938 as cartoons in The New Yorker by Charles Addams.

Although his characters eventually inspired numerous TV shows and films, the musical, which opened on Broadway in 2010, draws on the original cartoons.

The musical has played in Sydney, Buenos Aires, Tokyo and Prague since its inception.

'The Addams Family' opens at Gliwice's Musical Theatre (Teatr Muzyczny) on Friday. (nh)
