The building, which was the largest public edifice to be raised in inter-war Kraków, contains one of the most extensive art collections in the country, and it is the showpiece of the National Museum's network of nine branches in the city.

''Over the last decade, we managed to renovate all of our branches,'' noted director Zofia Gołubiew.

''Only the main building awaits its turn,'' she added.

A modern space for a rejigged main exhibition, as well as reimagined rooms for temporary shows are among the key goals.

The competition is being organised by the National Museum in association with the Kraków branch of the Association of Polish Architects (SARP), and the winner will be announced on 31 July.

The deadline for the submission of competition entries is 30 June. (nh)
