Town museum gets Polish singer's memorabilia

A collection of 418 letters and 71 telegrams which the opera star Ada Sari addressed to her parents has been donated to the regional museum in Stary Sącz, southern Poland.

Born Jadwiga Szayer in 1886, Ada Sari studied music in Kraków, Vienna and Milan.
After making her professional debut in Rome in 1909, she developed a spectacular career which included performances in some of the most prestigious venues in Europe (The Queen of the Night in Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ at La Scala in 1923 at the invitation of Toscanini), the United States (Carnegie Hall) and South America.
She returned to Poland in 1934 and sang at the Grand Opera in Warsaw.
During the Second World War, she directed an underground opera studio in Warsaw and started teaching.
After the war she continued to perform in operas and on the concert stage for two years, after which she devoted herself exclusively to teaching. She died in 1968, at the age of 82.
Ada Sari spent much of her youth in Stary Sącz. The gift comes from Ada Sari’s nephew. The correspondence dates from the years 1907-1927, and was sent by the singer from various European cities, where she studied and performed. (mk/rg)
