Polish film financing is thriving

Over the last decade, since the founding of the Polish Film Institute (PISF), a total of 220 feature length films have been financed.

Over the same period, the number of tickets sold to Polish films grew 16 times over, says daily Gazeta Wyborcza.

The average grant by PISF for the feature film amounts to approximately PLN 3-3.5 million (EUR 730,000- 850,000).

The current record holder is Battle of Warsaw, 1920, which received PLN 9 million (EUR 2.2 million), while Warsaw '44, Katyń, Hiszpanka and Wałęsa. A man of hope, received PLN 6 million each.

Meanwhile, 2013's Papusza received PLN 5.4 million.

Last year, local theatres screened 39 Polish films. Twenty eight of these were partly funded by the Institute.

Seven of the ten most popular films last year were supported by the Institute.

This included Ida, the first Polish film to win an Oscar. The Polish Film Institute is listed as having supported the film. (rg)
