Discovering the mysteries of Lower Silesian mountains and training courses to become a paratrooper are two of the things to be experienced at the Festival of Secrets in August.

The festival, which takes place at Książ Castle near Wałbrzych in south-west Poland, is the third of its kind.

The idea of the festival was thought up and is run by the author and journalist Joanna Lamparska, who says the secrets of the region in south-western Poland make it a very rich programme.

"Until today there are many secrets surrounding the locations of Ślęża and Radunia mainly connected with the Second World War. We are trying to evaluate what is legend and what is more likely to have happened,” Lamparska told PAP Life.

The festival will also include a meeting with Jerzy Cera, who tells visitors of the search for treasure and unfolds some of the secrets of the local hills. "Jerzy Cera looked into these cases and says a theory arose that in these hills there was a laboratory in which work was conducted [by the Nazis] on an atomic bomb,” Lamparska says.

It will also be possible to take part in practical training session for the Cichociemni.

Cichociemni ("Dark and Silent") were elite special-operations paratroops of the Polish Army in exile, created in the UK during the war to operate in Nazi-occupied Poland.

The Third Lower Silesian Festival of Secrets (Dolnośląski Festiwal Tajemnic) takes places from 14 to 16 August at the Książ Castle near Wałbrzych.

Originally built in the 13th century, Książ Castle, the third largest castle in Poland, and known before WWII by its German name Fürstenstein, is located on a rock cliff by the side of the Pełcznica River. At a height of 395m above sea level it is often called ‘the Pearl of Lower Silesia.’ (jh/rk)
