Most of the contestants have a solid musical education but at one stage in life decided to pursue a professional career in other fields.

The participants include physicians, lawyers, research workers, civil servants and IT specialists.

France and the United States are represented by eight pianists each, while Poland, Germany and Japan have five pianists apiece.

There are also four entrants from China, two from Australia, two from the United Kingdom and one from Canada.

They will all present a recital consisting of works by composers from the 18th to the 20th century, with at least one piece by Chopin being compulsory in every stage of the auditions.

The Warsaw competition for amateur pianists was founded in 2009. Its second edition, in 2012, was won by Gil Jetley from Britain, once a student of the Royal Academy of Music in London who has worked for four decades in IT and teaching. He was invited to give the opening recital at this year’s competition. (mk/nh)
