'Portrait of a Man in a Wig' by Krzysztof Lubieniecki has been in America for the last seven decades.

The painting was initially looted by Wehrmacht soldiers, and it ended up in Fischhorn Castle near the Austrian city of Salzburg.

However, an American soldier later removed the painting and ultimately took the artwork back to his home country.

Nevertheless, a descendant of that soldier recently looked into the provenance of the painting, and last month it was handed over to representatives of the Polish Culture Ministry at the FBI headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ministry of Culture has a database of lost Polish art and it currently lists about 60,000 items. (nh/rk)
