The screening was viewed by a chiefly American audience of several hundred at Georgetown University, Washington D.C., on Thursday.

“It’s really moving that the film has been so warmly received, and that spectators come to us to congratulate us,” said film director Sławomir Grünberg following the showing. “This gives us a sense of a job well done.”

The event, held at the university where Karski pursued an academic career for four decades, was attended by his former student, US Ambassador to Poland Stephen Mull, and his Polish counterpart in the US, Ryszard Schnepf.

Grünberg’s production, Poland’s candidate for the Oscar in the documentary category, is a blend of the former emissary’s own testimonies, archive footage, interviews and animation.

The film is to be made available for public viewing in Los Angeles as of 13 November, and is to be screened in New York in three weeks’ time.

Jan Karski, Poland’s World War II resistance fighter, who infiltrated Warsaw’s Jewish ghetto and the Izbica transit camp, was the first to deliver intelligence on the Holocaust to what the film refers to as the “Lords of Humanity”: British foreign secretary Anthony Eden, US president Franklin D. Roosevelt and US Supreme Court Judge Felix Frankfurter.
