A new Polish record was set over the weekend when the largest ever gathering of people dressed as St. Nicholas took place on the Main Market Square in Kraków, southern Poland.

As many as 4281 punters descended on the historic square on Saturday, smashing the previous record of 2000, which was made in 2014 in Chrzanów, also in southern Poland.

The weekend was jam-packed with events involving the red-suited fellow, as in Poland, St. Nicholas' Day (6 December) is an eagerly-awaited moment for children across the country.

Polish children customarily receive presents on both St. Nicholas's Day and on Christmas Eve (Wigilia).

Children write letters to St Nicholas in the lead-up to 6 December, stressing how well they have behaved and dropping a few hints about what might make the perfect present.

St Nicholas duly delivers the goods, which appear, as if by magic, on the morning of 6th December. Adults also often give each other gifts, but more so on 24 December. (nh/di)
