Around 225,000 pilgrims who will attend the World Youth Day with Pope Francis in Kraków at the end of July have declared their intention to visit the site of the former Nazi German extermination camp of Auschwitz, some 50 km from the venue of the event.

The Auschwitz Museum will organise special tours for them between 20-28 July and 1-3 August.

Entry passes will be given solely to World Youth Day pilgrims who register at the website mlodzi.duszpasterstwa.bielsko.pl/auschwitz/. There are still 75,500 bookings available.

In recent weeks, Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi said that Pope Francis is likely to visit Auschwitz, following in the footsteps of his predecessors, John Paul II, who toured the site during his first pilgrimage to his native Poland in 1979, and Benedict XVI, who visited Auschwitz in 2006.

The most likely date for Pope Francis’s visit is between 29-31 July. (mk/rg)
