The government is also planning a ban on advertising e-cigarettes and on selling them online.

"Thanks to the new regulations, there should be an increase in public awareness that exposure to nicotine is harmful, which should discourage people, especially young people, from reaching for both ordinary cigarettes and electronic cigarettes,” the government said a statement issued after a Cabinet meeting.

The bill was drawn up by the Polish health ministry, which has previously said the new measures were prompted by the need to adapt Polish legislation to a European Union directive.

The new rules must be given the go-ahead by the Polish parliament and by the president to come into force. (pk)
