A study by Poland’s National Library found that 63 percent had not reached for a book last year, up from a figure of 58.3 percent in 2014, the Polish parliament’s culture and media committee heard on Thursday.

Polish authorities are to plough PLN 669 million (EUR 155 million, USD 172 million) into a National Reading Development Programme between 2016 and 2020.

The initiative, adopted by parliament in October, will see more books bought for public libraries, which will be given a facelift and better equipment, and more support for school libraries. (pk)
