Titled ‘Fair Building’, the Polish pavilion focuses on providing appropriate, ethical and safe conditions for construction workers.

The idea behind the 15th biennale is to depict the correlation between architecture and the people implementing architectural projects, Polish pavilion commissioner Hanna Wróblewska told PAP.

“Most discussions related to architecture are centered on its impact on the environment, the correlation between new designs and existing urban landscapes,” Wróblewska says. “Hardly any attention is paid to the contribution of construction workers in executing a given architectural project. Our display is meant to show that such an attitude is changing.”

The key part of the pavilion comprises an installation reminiscent of a construction site. It includes recorded interviews with construction workers who discuss various aspects and stages of their work.

The second part of the ‘Fair Building’ project is made to look like an investor’s showroom, and is to acquaint visitors with statistics juxtaposing construction costs with low labour expenditure.

The Polish pavilion is hosted by Warsaw’s Zachęta gallery. The 15th Architecture Biennale in Venice runs until 27 November. (aba)
