Among those at a special Catholic Mass at the temple were President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Beata Szydło.

Organizers have estimated that the temple -- a towering structure that is 75 metres tall including the cross on its roof -- could be visited by tens of thousands of visitors on the country’s Independence Day on 11 November.

The history of the Temple of Divine Providence stretches back over 200 years and is associated with Poland’s first Constitution of 3 May 1791.

Two days after passing the constitution, members of parliament adopted a resolution that a temple should be built as a votive offering. However, Poland's turbulent history got in the way.

The construction of the Temple of Divine Providence finally began in 2002.
