Powidoki (“Afterimage”), tells the story of talented painter Władysław Strzemiński (1893-1952), an artist who refused to toe the communist party line during the Stalinist period.

Choosing to remain true to his own creative path, he suffered the consequences under a regime which brooked no dissent.

The film stars Bogusław Linda, one of Poland’s best known actors.

The Economist magazine has described “Afterimage” as a poignant film, adding that it “adds a powerful final note” to Wajda’s career.

Wajda, one of Poland's most famous directors, died in October at the age of 90.

“Afterimage” was given a warm reception at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in September but failed to make the shortlist of nine movies for this year's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
