According to the Łódź-based National Centre for Film Culture, there are a number of reasons why Łódź is worthy of the honour, if only to mention its internationally-renowned Film School, its film production studios, the Museum of Cinematography and several long-established educational projects run by the local film community.

The National Centre for Film Culture has established contacts with Rome, Sydney and Bradford in the UK, which hold the title of UNESCO City of Film.

An official application is to be sent to UNESCO in the middle of the year. Paris has already announced its decision to apply for the title.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network has 116 members in 54 countries. Two Polish cities are among them: Kraków is a UNESCO City of Literature and Katowice a UNESCO City of Music.
