Porto, a coastal city in northwest Portugal known for the production of Port wine, was voted top destination, followed by Italy’s Milan.

“This is a huge honor,” Gdańsk mayor Paweł Adamowicz was cited by the gdansk.naszemiasto.pl website as saying.

“It is worth recalling that Gdańsk was the only Polish city [in the running] and took part in the poll for the first time,” he added.

Twenty selected destinations competed for the title of best European destination and online voting lasted three weeks.

European Best Destinations is a tourism organisation based in Brussels, founded to promote culture and tourism in Europe.
