Some 3,000 guests are to attend the event, which will be officially opened on Sunday evening by President Andrzej Duda and UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova.

The gathering brings “international prestige for Poland, as representatives of 140 countries from around the globe are travelling to Kraków,” said deputy culture minister Magdalena Gawin.

Decisions on up to 200 cases related to natural and cultural heritage sites are to be sealed over the next ten days, including the choice of new places making the World Heritage Site list.

A historic lead, silver and zinc mining complex in Tarnowskie Góry, southern Poland, is the country’s candidate for a place, among 34 hopefuls.

The 41st session, held at the ICE Kraków Congress Center, will last until 12 July, and will be broadcast online.
