The survey, published in Nature magazine, concluded that the most physically active people live in Hong Kong -- they take 6,880 steps a day on average.
The least active people live in Indonesia, where the average is 3,513 steps a day.
Researchers studied people who have an app on their smartphones tracking their movements.
Some scientists recommend that people who want to stay fit should take at least 10,000 steps a day. Others say that much exercise is not necessary.
The United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 150 minutes of exercise a week, such as walking, jogging, swimming or riding a bike.
