Polish musicians shortlisted for 2017 Gramophone Awards

A CD featuring string quartets by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969), recorded by the Silesian Quartet, has been shortlisted for this year’s Gramophone magazine awards in the chamber music category.

Released by Chandos last year, the CD contains all of the composer’s seven string quartets, spanning the period from 1938 to 1965.
Adrian Thomas, a leading expert on Polish music, writes in the CD notes that “Bacewicz is one of the few postwar composers who have succeeded in writing music that is authentically playful.”
Founded in 1978 in the southern city of Katowice, the Silesian Quartet is a leading Polish string quartet.
Meanwhile, a CD by Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski with works by Mozart and Schumann has been shortlisted for this year’s Gramophone awards in the Instrumental category. The CD is the latest of Anderszewski's recordings under an exclusive contract with Warner Classics. The other nominees in this category are Murray Perahia, Daniil Trifonov, Beatrice Rana, Cédric Tiberghien, and Pavel Kolesnikov.
One of the six nominees in the choral category is Haydn’s The Seasons recorded by the Gabrieli Consort and Players under Paul McCreesh with Polish musicians: the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra and the Choir of the National Forum of Music in Wrocław, southwestern Poland.
The winners of the 2017 Gramophone Classical Music Awards will be announced on 1 September. (mk/str)
