The story of agent Krystyna Skarbek, who operated under the alias Christine Granville, was written by Polish writer Maria Nurowska, the daily said.

Nurowska published her book about Skarbek, entitled Miłośnica (The Lover) in 1999.

Nurowska has neither confirmed nor denied that Cruz would play the lead role, telling Super Express she is contractually obliged not to release any information.

But she said news about the movie would be announced between Christmas and the New Year.

Krystyna Skarbek went by the alias Christine Granville during World War II. She is credited with sabotaging the main communications on the River Danube in Hungary, as well as providing vital intelligence on oil transports to Germany from Romania's Ploiesti oilfields.

Skarbek has inspired books by four other authors and is also believed to have been the inspiration of at least one character in the James Bond series of novels.

Cruz is an acclaimed actress. In 2008 won an Oscar for her role in Woody Allen's Vicky Christina Barcelona. (vb/pk)
