The event is being held in Poland for the first time. It was launched on Wednesday evening and runs until Sunday.

About 2,500 music industry professionals, 200 journalists and over 50 bands from around the world are set to take part in this year’s gathering, which features a trade fair, talks, films and a showcase festival.

At the opening ceremony, WOMEX director Alexander Walter voiced satisfaction that the event was being held in Katowice, which in 2015 was included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Music.

The expo is dedicated to the world music genre, which draws on ethnic, folk, and traditional sounds, but also experiments with combining these with electronic music and jazz.
