Polish doctors end Cameroon mission

A 16-strong team of Polish medical professionals has returned home after a two-week medical mission in Cameroon, central Africa.

The team, comprising doctors, medical students and a nurse, conducted more than 90 operations and examined and offered treatment to some 1,700 patients during their stay in Sangmelima, southern Cameroon.
Prof. Andrzej Matyja, a surgeon, has told Poland’s PAP news agency: "It all began with a highly dramatic situation. We had hardly unpacked when a teenage boy was brought in with his foot severely damaged in a motorbike accident. He had to be operated on straight away. Luckily, the complicated surgery of sewing his Achilles tendon back together went very well.”
The Polish group, which also included pediatricians, anaesthesiologists and eye specialists, arrived in the southern Polish city of Kraków on Thursday.
This was the fourth Polish medical project in Cameroon. The previous missions were in 2008, 2011 and 2016. (mk/gs)
