Sales were nearly 30 percent up on 2016, hitting almost PLN 215 million (USD 62m, EUR 52m), IAR reported, citing data from the artinfo.pl website.

But Jan Koszutski, head of the Desa Unicum auction house, said total sales of works of art, including non-auction sales by galleries, were much higher, and may have reached PLN 500 million.

The biggest sale last year was that of famous Polish artist Stanisław Wyspiański's painting Macierzyństwo (Motherhood), which went for nearly PLN 4.4 million.

Koszutski said that buyers were interested in both Polish classics and contemporary art.

Last year 284 auctions of works of art were held in Poland.
