Her real-life husband Roberto Alagna plays her on-stage partner in the role of Canio, and as the New York Classical Review wrote: “There is a clear, natural chemistry between them. Her Nedda, though, is a striking creation all its own, a remarkably sensual reading of a role that is often played too quietly. She twirls around, dances with feather fans, and strikes poses on the hood of the company truck in the opening scene as though she’s the travelling troupe’s pinup model. […] Crucial to her success in the role is the relish with which she throws herself into the play of the second act, as though she’d been born to be a vaudeville star, rather than a singer”.

“Alagna and Kurzak make Met’s Pagliacci a night to remember. The most emotionally devastating performances ever seen here!”, wrote the New York Classical Review.

Pagliacci was staged in a double-bill with Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. Further performances are scheduled for 20, 25 and 29 of January and 1 February.

Kurzak made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2004.

Next season she is to sing the part of Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen.

On 16 February, Kurzak and Alagna are to appear in Szczecin, north-western Poland, in a gala concert to mark the 65th anniversary of the city’s Philharmonic. Kurzak is also to sing in Poznań in April and in Kraków in June. (mk/vb)
