The event also celebrated the 60th anniversary of Szostek-Radkowa’s debut as an opera singer.

Among the great number of bouquets of flowers and best wishes for the now-retired singer were those from President Andrzej Duda.

Szostek-Radkowa was a soloist of Warsaw's National Opera for four decades, appearing as Carmen and Madame Butterfly and singing parts in contemporary operas such as Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s The Devils of Loudun.

She sang at such prestigious venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and the opera houses in Vienna, Paris and Brussels.

She gave the first performances of works by leading 20th-century Polish composers Witold Lutosławski and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.

Szostek-Radkowa also pursued a teaching career. Several of her former students performed during Wednesday’s concert in her tribute.
