In 1999, the average Pole consumed 15 grams of salt a day. By 2014, this had fallen to around 10 grams, Poland’s PAP news agency has reported.
The World Health Organisation recommends a maximum of 5 grams a day, the equivalent of one teaspoon.
Excessive salt consumption raises blood pressure and is responsible for half of strokes and heart attacks, the IAR news agency has reported.
Too much salt also leads to an increased risk of stomach cancer, osteoporosis, and kidney and circulation problems.
Experts warn that consumers should beware of salt added to processed products such as savoury snacks, fast food, cold cuts and bread.
World Salt Awareness Week runs until Sunday.
