Only a third of Poles read books

The number of Poles who read books is low but stable with about 38 percent of Poles reading at least one book last year, the director of the National Library has said.

Tomasz Makowski said that only about nine percent of people in Poland read at least seven books last year.

Makowski said people were less likely to read if they did not see their family and friends reading.

He also said that people who read books read the news and used the Internet more often.

Detailed data on Poles' reading habits will be released in May.

Last year's data from the National Library showed that about 37 percent of Poles read at least one book in 2016. (vb)
