President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday said on Twitter that Alfie Evans, the British 23-month-old who has been taken off life support at a hospital in Liverpool, "must be saved."

Duda's tweet came after a UK high court judge on Tuesday ruled that the boy's parents could not take him abroad for further treatment.

The boy's father, Tom Evans, told reporters that he had no words to express his gratitude for the support given by Duda, according to Poland’s wpolityce.pl news website.

The father also said that he and his wife had received help from Polish lawyers during their battle over their son’s rights, wpolityce.pl reported.

Tom Evans described Poland as an amazing country and said Poles were warm-hearted and sympathetic people, wpolityce.pl said.

Meanwhile, dozens of people on Wednesday staged a silent demonstration in front of the British embassy in Warsaw to show their support for Alfie Evans' parents, with further gatherings scheduled to take place on Thursday and Friday, according to another report by wpolityce.pl.

In a sign of solidarity, some 5,000 people have reportedly signed a petition to President Duda, asking him to grant Alfie Polish citizenship so that the boy could be given medical care in Poland.
