The films are being shown in Polish with English subtitles during the five-day celebration of Polish cinema, which began with an opening gala at the Directors Guild of America Theatre in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday.

The 14th New York Polish Film Festival opened with the American premiere of Birds Are Singing in Kigali, an award-winning movie by Joanna Kos-Krauze and her late husband Krzysztof Krauze about a Polish ornithologist who rescues a Rwandan girl from genocide.

Director Agnieszka Holland’s mystery drama Spoor, Poland’s official entry for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign-Language Film category earlier this year, is also among the festival offerings.

Several Polish filmmakers, including director Kasia Adamik and actress Jowita Budnik, are expected to meet with the audience during the event, which runs until Sunday and celebrates the centenary of Poland's independence this year.

As in previous years, the best film will be given an award named after the late Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski.

The Beyond Borders Award celebrates films that transcend the cultural and language barriers separating people.
