Pawlikowski’s film is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in 1950s Stalinist Poland as well as in Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris.

The cast includes leading Polish actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.

Pawlikowski was born in Warsaw in 1957. Having left Poland at the age of 14, he first lived in Germany and Italy before moving to Britain. He studied literature and philosophy. In the mid-1980s he took up filmmaking, initially focusing on documentaries and then moving on to feature films.

His film Ida won an Oscar in 2015 for best foreign-language film.

Japanese director Hizokazu Koreeda's Shoplifters, a portrait of a poor family, won the Palme d'Or, the top award at the Cannes Film Festival.
