Over 130 photographs portraying the fashion scene of the 1950s and 60s by celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene are on display at the Centennial Hall in Wroclaw, south-western Poland.

The photos constitute a small fraction of Greene’s collection of over 3,000 photographs, which became Poland’s property in the wake of an embezzlement scandal of the early 1990s.

After Greene’s death in 1985, the entire collection was taken over by a bank. It was subsequently purchased by American financier Dino Matingas. Accused of cheating Poland out of millions of dollars, he gave the collection to Poland in partial repayment for Poland’s losses.

In recent years, small parts of the collection have been auctioned off. In 2014, the bulk of the collection was purchased by the Centennial Hall Enterprise of Wrocław. It is deposited with the city’s State Archives which takes care of its protection and conservation, as well as makes sure that it is not dispersed.

The current exhibition is the fifth public presentation of fragments of the collection. Previous shows featured photographs of Marylin Monroe, Marlene Dietrich and Audrey Hepburn.

The Milton H. Greene collection also includes shots featuring Frank Sinatra, Lisa Minelli, Paul Newman, Alfred Hitchcock and Marlon Brando.

The exhibition remains on show until July 29.
