300,000 Polish fathers behind in alimonies

Three hundred and one thousand Polish fathers are in total PLN 11.8 billion (EUR 2.73 bn, USD 3.19 bn) behind in child support payments, a daily reported.

Citing data office BIG InfoMonitor, the Polska the Times daily said that men comprise 95 percent of the indebted parents totalling 317,953.

The record-holder has been evading alimonies for ten years and owes PLN 668,000 to his children, the daily said.

In May, the number of parents shirking their duty of paying maintenance arrears went up 7,874 year on year.

Annually, the state covers some PLN 1.5 bn of overdue payments from the alimony fund, said Halina Kochalska, an expert from BIG InfoMonitor.

Under Polish law, failure to make alimony payments carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
