The pianists come from Poland, Japan, Russia, China, France, the United States, Romania, Belgium and Ukraine. The Polish entrants constitute the largest national group.

The participants will have at their disposal pianos from the National Chopin Institute's collection, including Erards from 1838, 1849 and 1855, Pleyels from 1848 and 1854, and an 1843 Broadwood, as well as replicas of period instruments, including Chopin's own Buchholtz, specially commissioned for the competition.

An international jury is to include names such as Dang Thai Son, Nikolai Demidenko and Nelson Goerner.

The Chopin Competition on Period Instruments is a new initiative by the Warsaw-based National Chopin Institute.

Warsaw has also served as the venue for the International Chopin Competition, which was launched in 1927 and is held every five years. The 18th edition of the event is scheduled for 2020.
