The prestigious distinction is given to outstanding artists by Poland’s Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

Kurzak was given the award at a ceremony during a concert of popular operatic arias at the historic Wawel Hill, a former royal residence in the city of Kraków.

In her thank-you speech, Kurzak said she was proud to receive the Gloria Artis Medal “at a place which is probably the most important for every Pole, at Wawel, the heart of Poland”.

Aleksandra Kurzak studied in Wrocław and Hamburg. A prizewinner of several vocal competitions, she has developed a spectacular career, with performances at the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Her engagements in the 2018/2019 season include the parts of Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen at the Met and those of Violetta and Desdemona in Verdi’s La Traviata and Otello at the Paris Opera. (mk/vb)
