Polish culture, independence centenary, celebrated in NY

A Polish cultural festival with performances by Polish song-and-dance troupes accompanied the three-day Polish-American festival which ended in Buffalo, New York, on Sunday.

Thousands of Polish Americans turned out for the Pulaski Day event which showcased Polish arts, cuisine and music.
Polish Senator Anna Maria Anders, the daughter of a WWII hero, top Polish boxer Adam Kownacki, and American actress of Polish descent, Loretta Swit, famous for portraying Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan in hit US television series M*A*S*H, were among those in attendance.
The event also celebrated Poland’s independence centenary, and the nearby Niagara waterfall was lit white and red in tribute to the country.
Pulaski Day is held in memory of the Polish American War of Independence hero Kazimierz Pułaski (Casimir Pulaski).
Poland regained independence on 11 November 1918, the last day of WWI, after more than 120 years of partitions and foreign rule. (vb)
