Isserlis is a descendant of the founder of the Remah synagogue in the city’s Jewish district of Kazimierz.
Built in the 16th century, the synagogue is named after Rabbi Moshe Isserles, known as Rema. Tradition has it that the synagogue was founded by his father Israel ben Josef.
In addition to a public concert on August 17 with American pianist Ya-Fei Chuang, Steven Isserlis will give a private performance in the Remah synagogue in honour of his ancestors.
The Music in Old Kraków festival comprises 19 events, including an inaugural recital by famous Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov and a concert of works by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, who turns 85 in November.
The festival runs until August 31.
