Some 17,000 Poles lost their driver’s license for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h or more in the first eight months of 2018, the Rzeczpospolita daily has reported.

“The rate is one-third lower year-on-year, dropping by 5,200,” traffic police spokesman Radosław Kobryś said, according to Rzeczpospolita.

The change follows the introduction in May of stricter rules aimed at curbing bravado on Polish roads, Rzeczpospolita said.

Under the new rules, drivers caught exceeding the speed limit by 50km/h or more in a built-up area can have their license taken away.

The downward trend was particularly visible in the summer months when the weather was favourable to high-speed driving, Rzeczpospolita reported.

Some 1,800 drivers lost their licenses in July, down from 3,700 in the same month a year earlier. Similarly, in August, the year-on-year decline reached 40 percent.

Antoni Rzeczkowski from the Warsaw police force said: “The threat of losing one's driver’s license has done the trick.”

“Drivers are more careful not to exceed the speed limit by 50km/h also because there are more spot checks on Polish roads,” Rzeczkowski added.
