LA university celebrates 100 years of Polish independence

The Polish community, students, lovers of European culture and music and locals attended the concert.

It featured works by Ignacy Paderewski, Grażyna Bacewicz, Karol Szymanowski and other Polish musicians, while Professor Lisa Cooper Vest gave a lecture about composers of the inter-war period and the influence of music on politics.

Conductor Jo-Michael Scheibe said the meeting with Polish music was a special experience, adding that his only Polish student, and Vest, who speaks Polish, helped prepare the concert.

On November 11 Poland will celebrate 100 years of regaining its independence after more than a century of partitions and foreign rule. (vb/pk)
