The fourth edition of the MONOWschód festival is this year themed “closer to the viewer”. It is the only theatre festival of its kind in the world and attracts Polish theatre companies and amateur and professional actors.

Lika Kiejzik of the Polish Theatre Studio in Vilnius said the one-performer drama was the most difficult kind of play and a huge challenge for actors who have to “keep the viewers' attention for an hour”.

She also said the festival this year focuses on Poland’s centenary of independence.

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.

The festival will be accompanied by concerts, a photography exhibition and drama workshops. It closes on October 22.
