Prof. Andrzej Kowalczyk, rector of the university, described Coetzee as “a figure who is an academic and moral authority for us.”

He added: “The academic community needs masters from whom we can learn.”

The University of Silesia, in the southern Polish city of Katowice, awarded the writer the honour on Tuesday.

John Maxwell Coetzee is a South Africa-born novelist, translator and winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in literature. He lives in Australia.

He was the first author to be awarded the prestigious Booker Prize twice: for Life & Times of Michael K in 1983, and for Disgrace in 1999.
