They were joined on stage by residents of a local young offenders’ home.

The play, titled Secret, was performed by five homeless actors in a project coordinated by the Gdańsk branch of the Caritas charity.

The theatrical production depicts the story of success-obsessed parents who lose their children as a result.

The man behind the initiative, Marcin Bednarz from Caritas, said: “There are many sad people walking the streets.”

“We have decided to brighten up their lives, give people a boost to act, breathe new life into them,” he added.

“The homeless come to Caritas to wash up, eat and then they leave. We wanted to engage them in something more meaningful,” Bednarz said.

A rough sleeper named Beata said: “A homeless person may get back up on his or her feet as well.”

Caritas' Bednarz said he wanted to continue helping amateur actors by organising meetings with social workers and career advisors.
