Polish painting auctioned off for record price

A painting by Polish artist Wojciech Fangor has been auctioned off for PLN 4.7 million (USD 1.25 mln, EUR 1.10 mln), a record price in the history of Polish auctions.

The canvas, entitled M 39 and made in 1969, was put up for auction at the prestigious DESA Unicum auction house in Warsaw.
The painting’s pre-sale estimates ranged from PLN 2.2 million to PLN 2.8 million.
Fangor’s op-art paintings are characterised by geometric shapes and striking colours.
He was the first Polish painter to have a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
He died in 2015.
