The 1958 series of paintings, entitled “A Study of Space,” was sold as a single item, as intended by the artist.

The canvases were bought by a private collector on Tuesday at the prestigious Polswiss Art auction house in Warsaw.

Two weeks ago, another painting by Fangor, entitled M 39, was sold for a then-record PLN 4.7 million.

Fangor’s op-art paintings are characterised by geometric shapes and striking colours.

He was the first Polish painter to have a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

He died in 2015.
